Coexisting vacua and effective gravity

چکیده
Our Universe is perhaps a domain separated by physical phase boundaries from other domain-Universes with different vacuum energy density (cosmological constant) and matter content. The coexistence of different quantum vacua can then be regulated by the exchange of global fermionic charges between the vacua, such as baryonic and leptonic charge, or by fermion zero modes on the phase boundary. An example would be a static de-Sitter Universe embedded in an asymptotically flat spacetime.

Coexistence of different vacua in the effective quantum field theory and Multiple Point Principle
Recently the Multiple Point Principle has been introduced [1], which states that ‘there are many “vacua” with approximately the same energy density or cosmological constant’, and as a consequence Nature adjusts the coupling and mass parameters so as to make many different vacua exist and have approximately the same energy. We show that the first part of this principle naturally emerges, i.e. al...
متن کاملWeak Gravity Conjecture
We investigate whether the eternal chaotic inflation can be achieved when the weak gravity conjecture is taken into account. We show that even the assisted chaotic inflation with potential λφ or mφ can not be eternal. The effective field theory description for the inflaton field breaks down before inflation reaches the eternal regime. We also find that the total number of e-folds is still bound...
متن کاملQuantum Horizons of the Standard Model Landscape
The long-distance effective field theory of our Universe—the Standard Model coupled to gravity— has a unique 4D vacuum, but we show that it also has a landscape of lower-dimensional vacua, with the potential for moduli arising from vacuum and Casimir energies. For minimal Majorana neutrino masses, we find a near-continuous infinity of AdS3×S1 vacua, with circumference ∼ 20 microns and AdS3 leng...
متن کاملAnthropics versus Determinism in Quantum Gravity
Recently the multitude of vacua in string theory have led some authors to advocate the anthropic principle as a possible resolution for the contrived set of parameters that seem to govern our universe. I suggest that string theories should be viewed as effective theories, and hence of limited utility rather than as “theories of everything”. I propose that quantum gravity should admit a form of ...
متن کاملQuantum vacua: Momentum space topology of fermion zero modes
Quantum vacua are characterized by the topological structure of their fermion zero modes. The vacua are distributed into universality classes protected by topology in momentum space. The vacua whose manifold of fermion zero modes has co-dimension 3 are of special interest because in the low-energy corner the fermionic excitations become the Weyl relativistic chiral fermions, while the dynamical...
